Weekly Summary 11/13/2015

This week was really fun because mashups make you think outside of one genre while remixes force you to change the way something that has already been made. We had to do two remixes this week. I chose to make a prequel for my room and add Waldo to someone’s Richmond, VA picture collage. The daily creates for this week were interesting. November 7ths daily create was to make a ds106 inspired winter hat.

November 10ths daily create was to find a picture that portrayed a bridge over troubled waters.

The assignment bank mashup assignments were really fun. I had to do 10 stars worth of mashup assignments and one of my assignments had to be related to my host character. I decided to do two 3 star assignments and two 2 star assignments. The first 3 star assignment was to mashup two iconic movie scenes. The other 3 star assignment was to take one picture a day and combine them in a video. The first 2 star assignment was to put Talky Tina’s head onto something unusual. The other 2 star assignment was to mash together clips of your favorite TV character into one video.

Weekly Summary 11/6/2015

This week was crazy. I felt like I never stopped working on ds106 video assignments. I absolutely loved the daily creates this week. October 31sts daily create was to take a selfie and make yourself into a superhero.

The assignment bank video assignments were stressful this week. I felt like I was constantly working on them and not making any progress. We had to do a total of 16 stars with 10 of the stars relating to our host characters. I ended up doing two 5 star assignments relating to my host character and two 3 star assignments. The first 5 star assignment I did was to make a video of the moments of our day. The other 5 star assignment I did was to make a digital diary. The first 3 star assignment I did was to make an instant replay of an action shot. The other 3 star assignment I did was to make a mini documentary.

Weekly Summary 10/30/2015

I enjoyed this week more than I thought I would. I don’t normally like making videos of myself but I found the fun side to it and it’s not too bad. I did a video analysis of a scene from The Ring. This assignment was a bit ruff in the production stage but the analysis stage was really fun. The Daily Creates were awesome this week because I ended up relating both of them to my host character. October 25ths daily create was to make a tongue twister.

October 26ths daily create was to make a missing poster.

The assignment bank video assignments this week were surprisingly more fun than I thought they would be. We had to do 10 stars with 4 of those stars involving our host character. I did the DIY product commercial for 5 stars and used my host character to add gruesome humor to the video. I also made a video about something that I love for 2 stars. The final video assignment I did was to spell out a word or phrase in sign language for 3 stars.

Weekly Summary 10/23/2015

This week was a bit crazy since it was also Homecoming week but I ended up getting everything done. Listening to everyone’s show was really cool. I loved listening to the 3rd Millennium Countdown. The Daily Creates were really fun this week. October 21sts daily create was to make a stick figure out of something from nature.

October 22nds daily create was to find something that is pretty on the outside but hides something bad.

October 23rds daily create was to remove something from a famous painting.

The assignment bank assignments were fun this week because we could choose the genre. We had to do 10 stars using our host character and another host character from our class. I decided to do 5 stars from the visual genre and 5 stars from the writing genre. The first visual assignment I did was to make a picture from 4 lines, 5 dots, and 1 curve which was 3 stars. The second visual assignment I did was to visualize something scary that I wouldn’t want to see outside of my window which was 2 stars. Weekly Summary 10/16/2015

This week was super fun. I enjoyed the challenge of making a radio show and loved the group I was in. It seemed like every time we talked about our show we were all on the same page. I detailed how our group made our radio show and how we divided the work. You can listen to our final radio show below:

October 15ths daily create was to describe your luckiest day.

October 16ths daily create was to find an image of your favorite era in history.

Weekly Summary 10/9/2015

This week was a little hectic. Luckily I found a group for the radio show quickly, which took some of stress away. After we decided what we were going to do for our show, I made a logo for our show. I also detailed how our radio show will be laid out and what I am doing on my part of the show.

I liked the assignment bank assignments this week but they were a bit too stressful for my taste. We only had to do 10 stars, but 5 of those stars had to connect to our host character. I chose to do two 3 star assignments connecting to my host character and one 4 star assignment to round out the 10 stars. The first assignment I did was the 4 star assignment. I chose to do the 911 call assignment and loved it so much that I decided to make a tutorial for it to help others be successful with the assignment in the future. The next assignment I did was the sounds of my day assignment and I based it off of my host character. The final assignment I did was to tell a story and use sound effects to accentuate it. This week turned out to be very unnecessarily stressful but I got through it.

Weekly Summary 10/2/2015

I LOVED DESIGN WEEK! I absolutely love designing things and am glad I got to read up on concepts of design and how they work to better designs. I enjoyed reading The Vignelli Canon and wrote about how I interpreted Vignelli’s concepts. Once I read on how to use design concepts to better my design skills, I did the DesignBlitz to try to find the concepts that were discussed in the reading. I also watched Alien, one of my favorite movies, and discussed how these design concepts were used in the movie. I really enjoyed doing the Love at First Shot assignment because I got to use a picture of my grandparents.

The daily creates I did this week were awesome because I got to create a lot of new things while keeping design principles in the back of my mind. September 27ths daily create was to create a new road sign.

September 28ths daily create was to combine two logos into one.

September 29ths daily create was to draw what we bought that day.

I loved doing the assignment banks assignments this week. Since we had to do an assignment that was at least 4 stars I did one 4 star assignment, two 3 star assignments, and one 2 star assignment. The 4 star assignment I did was to use each letter of my name as the first letter of a word that describes me. One of the 3 star assignments I did was to display a story using four icons. The other 3 star assignment I did was to take a picture and change the concept of the picture. The 2 star assignment I did was to draw a maze and make it as funky as I wanted. This week was great because I got the opportunity to enhance my design skills and learn more about a subject that I love.

Weekly Summary 9/25/2015

Not gonna lie, I was dreading this week. I saw that we were focusing on audio this week and I thought “I don’t want to do this. I don’t know how to do this. I’m gonna totally fail this week.” but I decided to start by downloading Audacity and playing around with it. I watched some tutorials on YouTube and decided to try my hand at it. It turned out to be really fun and not as hard as I thought it was gonna be. It helped that I listened to all four radio shows this week so I could get a better sense of audio and how it is used when pictures aren’t used with it. Here were some of the highlights from the radio shows:

Monday night:

Tuesday night:

Wednesday night:

Thursday night:

I then decided to try my hand at making my own radio bumper since I had heard some on DS106 radio. Now that I had some experience at creating audio, I decided to translate a page from the “Last Laugh” from Tales of the Crypt into audio. I enjoyed this assignment because I chose the first page of the story and got to set the tone for the entire story. I also thought of some cool ideas for the radio show we have to run later in the semester and thought about how I could entertain an audience for 30 minutes. I then got to reflect on the audio storytelling that we have exposed ourselves to this week. Included in my Audio Storytelling post is my discussion of the podcast “Moon Graffiti” and the Alien: Audio-Biomechanics reading.

The daily creates I did this week were really fun. September 20ths daily create was to create a story from 5 pictures.

September 21sts daily create was to put a print all over a picture of me.

September 22nds daily create was to put someone on Abbey Road.

I really enjoyed the assignment bank assignments this week. I was apprehensive to start them but decided that since we only had to do 10 stars I would just dive in. I decided to do three assignments since I found a 4 star assignment I liked and I already had to do a 3 star assignment, so I found another 3 star assignment that I wanted to do. The 3 star assignment that I had to do was to create a story using at least 5 sound effects and relate it to your host character. I also found a 4 star assignment I wanted to do which was to make a minute long audio clip that scared the listener or was Halloween themed. The final 3 star assignment I decided to do was to display an emotion through sound effects. Even though I was dreading this week, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I discovered that I love listening to and creating sound clips and can’t wait for my next audio assignment.

Weekly Summary 9/18/2015

This week was very interesting for me personally. I tried to read through the list of our assignments that we needed to do for week 4 but my eye kept jumping to the Photoblitz. I was confused and curious as to what a Photoblitz was and decided to read through the description of it. I was super excited to do it after reading the list I received of pictures I needed to take for it and decided to do it right away. I really enjoyed making My Photoblitz and can’t wait to do it again. As for the readings about the visuals of storytelling, I found them to be very interesting and was astonished that I actually use methods of photography already, without even knowing it. I really enjoyed the reflection on cinematography as well, mostly because I got to watch one of my favorite horror movies. However, analyzing The Ring was harder than I expected. I found myself watching it for pleasure more than a few times and had to remember to look for elements of photography instead of just watching it for entertainment. Watching The Ring also helped me create my paranormal image. Samara, the deceased girl who kills anyone that watches the tape, is very pale with long black hair. I saw her in The Ring and remembered a picture I took with my friend where the lighting made me look so pale that I looked like a ghost. I ended up using the image as my paranormal image while composing a story about me being an actual ghost to make it seem a bit more scary than it originally looks.

I loved doing this weeks daily creates. September 14ths daily create was to make a cover for a self-help book that wasn’t that helpful.

September 15ths daily create was to post a picture that stirred an emotion in the viewer.

September 16ths daily create was to take a recent picture and make it look old.

The assignment bank assignments were fun for me since I am a very visual person and we had to do 12 stars of visual assignments. I decided to do four 3 star assignments because I found two 3 star assignments that I really wanted to do and decided that doing two other 3 star assignments would be easiest to compute. I ended up doing the what’s in my bag visual assignment for 3 stars, the visualizing poetry visual assignment for 3 stars, the weavesilk visual assignment for 3 stars, and the redoing a past pose visual assignment for 3 stars. Overall, I enjoyed this week and liked that it tested me a bit more than the previous weeks.

Weekly Summary 9/11/2015

I loved how this week’s readings, videos, and assignments were all connected. For the readings I read “Last Respects” from Tales from the Crypt and “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson. I enjoyed both of these readings and liked how they provoked emotions other than fear. I also really enjoyed watching the video about Vonnegut’s method and thought it was hilarious while very informative. I also loved writing a host character. I completely made up this character and found a place for her in American Horror Story’s storyline.

This week’s daily creates were really fun. September 8ths daily create was to make Kelsey feel better after her computer crashed.

September 10ths daily create was to write about an ocean in your backyard.

September 11ths daily create was to take a movie title, change a letter in the title, and draw a picture of what that movie would be about.

The assignment bank assignments were really fun. I don’t typically like writing but these assignments were actually exciting. We had to do 8 stars worth of writing assignments so I did the bucket list assignment for 3 stars, the favorite place to live assignment for 2 stars, and the picture is worth a thousand words assignment for 3 stars. I included the story “The Lottery” in my bucket list assignment because I never want to win the lottery ever again. I also made a menu for the blog and it has made organizing my blog sooooo much easier.
